PATRIOT DAY CELEBRATION
Enterprise Lions Club, Redding Fire Department, Cal Fire, police and military personnel will conduct a Patriot Day Celebration at the Giant Flag along I-5 (Bechelli Lane) at 7:00AM on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The Giant Flag will be raised by uniformed color guard personnel and lowered to one-half staff in honor of those killed on September 11, 2001. The flag flies to honor those killed on 9-11-01 while honoring those who are serving and have served our country and our community. The Giant Flag was dedicated on 9-11-02, one year after the attacks on our land.
Take it to the Top
“Take it to the Top” is the new slogan for the Enterprise Lions Club’s campaign to raise $150,000 for an Endowment Fund for the giant American Flag in Redding. With only $25,000 more to go; the Enterprise Lions have launched their “Take it to the Top” campaign with a fund-drive planned on Flag Day, June 14, in hopes of meeting their goal and finishing out the campaign.
On Flag Day, donations will be accepted at the Flag site on North Bechelli Lane from 6 a.m.-6p.m. All donations that come to the Endowment at the Community Foundation and are tax deductible. Donations of $5,000 or more will be memorialized on a brass plaque at the Flag site once the campaign is complete.
After the attacks on American soil of September 11, 2001, the Enterprise Lions set out to raise a giant flag pole to commemorate our nation’s heroes and those who give service to our community. In a one-day fund drive, businesses, churches, service clubs, governmental bodies, schools and many individuals donated generously toward the installation of the flag and the completion of the flag pole site on North Bechelli Lane. Additionally, Redding First Church of the Nazarene generously contributed the beautiful landscaping around the flag site.
In the nearly eight years since the flag was raised the Lions have had to pay for flag replacement and maintenance costs to the tune of $6,000 per year. The Club is extremely diligent about using their flags as long as possible, mending minor tears and whatever they can while still maintaining the dignity of the flag. Yet with weather and freeway pollution, the flags often need to be replaced up to four times a year. $6,000 a year purchases two winter flags, which are heavier and more durable in wet weather, and two summer flags, which are lighter and fly better in soft summer winds, and allows for a budget for site maintenance.
In 2006, the Lions opened an Endowment with the Community Foundation with the goal of raising $150,000 that will produce an annual payout that will cover the flags maintenance for years to come. Today the fund has a balance of over $125,000 and has received well over 1000 donations from the community.
So please consider a donation to this fund and help “Take it to the Top” of their goal allowing this landmark Flag to grace our sky for generations to come. Contact the Community Foundation at (530)244-1219 with questions.
